About Evolution Gaming Dream Catcher

Debuting in February 2017, Evolution Gaming Dream Catcher set a precedent for what live casino games can be online and initiated the trend of innovative titles that we continue to see today.

Dream Catcher is described by its game provider as “an unequal game of chance played using a super-sized, vertically mounted spinning wheel.” Its centrepiece is a large vertical money wheel similar to those that are found at land-based casinos. You might have heard of them referred to as Big Six, Big Wheel, Money Wheel or simply Money Wheel. This game release was one of the standouts of 2017 so much so that it beat nine other shortlisted companies to be named Digital Product of the Year at the Global Gaming Awards that same year.

As avid roulette and blackjack players, it took us a little time to become accustomed to Dream Catcher. We only have praise for it today, so let’s take a closer look.

How to play Dream Catcher

Can you picture the Wheel of Fortune TV game show where contestants spun the wheel to win cash prizes according to the segment the wheel came to rest on? Well, that’s the premise of Evolution’s live money wheel, Dream Catcher. It’s especially straight-forward to understand and bet on as its designed to appeal to a wider audience of casino games but let’s walk through how to win on Dream Catcher together.

Place your preferred chip value on the number (either 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 or 40) you anticipate the wheel will come to a stop at and if it does in fact stop at that number, you win. Additionally, there are 2x and 7x multipliers that act as bonus spins which multiply your next win.

In short, the benefits of playing Dream Catcher can be summed up as:

  • A live, interactive Money Wheel game that appeals to slot players.
  • Easy to learn and play.
An immersive experience with dynamic close-ups, light and sound effects.
  • The potential to multiply wins many times over with payouts up to €500,000.

You’ll see the wheel explained in more detail further down, but for now let’s take the time to understand its rules.

Dream Catcher Game Rules

Once the betting time opens, you’ll be able to place bets between 10c up to around €2,500. Keep in mind that the higher betting limit may vary between operators.

In the instance that the wheel comes to rest on one of the two multiplier segments, all players’ bets remain fixed and the wheel is spun another time. This second spin usually determines the winning number, whose odds are then multiplied by 2x or 7x accordingly. However if the pointer lands on a multiplier segment again, the wheel must be spun again until he or she obtains a result on any one of the numbered segments, that is 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 or 40. In other words, the final winning number may be multiplied a number of times, which is why the provider set a default maximum win of €500,000 or otherwise as specified by the operator, which you’ll see in the limits panel.

Perhaps a practical example will make things a little clearer. Say the wheel stops on the 2x multiplier, the 7x multiplier and the 2x multiplier again before coming to rest on the number 10. If you placed your chips on the number 10 during the initial round, you can calculate your payout as follows:

(10 to 1) x 2 x 7 x 2 = (10 to 1) x 28 = 280:1.

Dream Catcher RTP and payouts

Let’s take a look through the game’s RTP and odds. Its optimal theoretical return to player is 96.58% based on a maximum win of €500,000 but it does range between 90.57%-96.58% overall. The payout odds of any given segment correspond to the number of that segment so they’re simple to remember. That being said, you’ll find them in the table below for your convenience.
Number on the wheelNumber of segmentsPayout

2152:1
575:1
10410:1
20220:1
40140:1
2x1Multiplies the payout of your next winning number by 2x
7x1Multiplies the payout of your next winning number by 7x

Keep in mind that any malfunction whilst you’re playing will void the round in question as well as all its eventual payouts.

Can you play Dream Catcher for free?

Much like any other live casino game, you’re unable to play Dream Catcher online for free. Although it’s disappointing to hear that free play is not available, it’s unsurprising due to the high overhead costs associated with running a live dealer studio. Some online operators do allow you to enter the game, navigate the interface and see how others play without having to actually place a bet yourself. We recommend you spend a little time doing just that before actually placing a bet for the first time.

Dream Catcher Strategy & Tips

We’re almost certain that you’re wondering what the best way to play Dream Catcher and how to master the technique by now. For games such as roulette and blackjack, it’s suitable to take a look back at betting systems that were developed by great mathematicians. As the concept of live casino game show is fairly new there aren’t any betting strategies to fall back on.

You can choose to spread your bets over the numbers 5, 10, 20 and 40 such that you’ll cover the segments that offer the highest payouts. And if you were to land a multiplier on top of this, you could get a fairly decent win. If you win on the number 5 with a €1 bet, you’ll earn €5 alone but if this number were paired with a 7x multiplier, the payout will be a sweet €35, and that’s a lower paying segment.

Alternatively, you could opt to bet exclusively on the 1 and 2 segments such that you’ll cover 38 out of the 54 segments on the wheel. Your returns will be relatively low but steady and you won’t work your way through your casino balance too quickly. During one of our playing sessions, we saw six 1 segments come up in a row so this strategy could indeed prove worthwhile.

Lastly, you could choose to put your money on the 20 or 40 segments, that is, the highest paying ones. This is the most risky approach to take as you’ll only cover a small percentage of the wheel but it could pay off if you’re lucky.

If we were to recommend anything, we’d suggest aiming to build your bankroll with bets on the segments of the wheel that appear most often before attempting the rarer, high-reward segments. In this way, you can enjoy the game for longer with the chance of reaping some high returns. Ultimately, there is no one winning best Dream Catcher strategy. Simply try out a few approaches and see which suits your gaming habits and works well for you.

The wheel

Evolution Dream Catcher Review - 7

It should come as no surprise by now but the Dream Catcher wheel – custom-built and engineered to precision by legendary casino equipment supplier, TCSJOHNHUXLEY – is the focal point of this game.

As we said above, it’s divided into 54 segments, each separated by pins. 52 of these segments are marked with a number and a corresponding, unique colour for each one. For your reference, 1 = yellow, 2 = blue, 5 = purple, 10 = green, 20 = red or 40 = red. The 2x multiplier and 7x multiplier are coloured silver and gold respectively.

When the betting period comes to a close, the presenter spins the wheel, either clockwise or anticlockwise, alternatingly. The pointer, mounted atop a flexible piece of leather at the apex of the wheel, signals the winning number while dividing pins on the wheel brush up against the pointer to increase the tension before the wheel stops.

The environment and the dealer

Dream Catcher looks less like the conventional table games you may be used to and more like a vertical view of the main attraction of the Wheel of Fortune TV show. For starters, the studio is illuminated with a number of continuously changing LEDs. The glare of these lights are reflected in both the ceiling and the floor of the area, creating more of an immersive feel.

Due to the nature of the game, the dealer is seemingly free to move around the set as he or she pleases, with probable markings on the set to notify them of where the cameras are. To the right of the steam, you’ll catch sight of a discreet podium which is probably where the dealer receives real-time notifications and is able to chat with players.

This is probably the one Evolution game where there’s no strict code of conduct for the live dealers, both in terms of their personality and their dress. Presenters are encouraged to show their personality and interact with players in a more relaxed way than at other tables. Perta, one of our dealers, was very experienced and super chatty with all the players at the table, talking about an April Fools prank she played on her boyfriend. Similarly, their dress code is quite lax – suits for the gentlemen and party dress for the ladies.

What Dream Catcher looks like & how it works

You’ve seen what the studios and the dealers are like but what about how the stream winds up on your PC and smartphone in terms of audio and visuals? Let’s take a look.

Interface

If you’ve played any Evolution game before, you’ll know that its standard user interface is sleek and simple to use. Instead of reinventing the wheel, this software supplier took the best parts of its tried and tested games’ interface and adapted this for its first live casino game show title.

You can regard the screen in two parts: ¾ are the game stream whilst the other ¼ features the digitally-rendered betting layout. The latter is found towards the bottom half of your screen whether on PC or mobile (in landscape or portrait mode), and this is where you’ll interact with the game.

The betting layout is a rectangular shape made up of banknotes in the same numbers and colours that appear on the wheel. Keep your eyes just above this area when you’re playing as a green banner appears to announce when betting time is open. On the right, you’ll see the results of earlier rounds, the Autoplay button, the option to bet on up to 3 other games and access to the lobby should you wish to try your luck at another of this provider’s titles. On the left, you’ll find your current casino balance, your total bet and the chat function above which a list of each round’s winners appears.

There’s access to more functions at the top left of the interface too. Here you’ll find the payouts table you saw above including the specific casino’s minimum and maximum wager limits for each bet type. You’re able to pin this in place if you prefer, but from our experience it tends to clutter the stream. If you’re a PC gambler and happen to have two screens at hand – one to play on and another space – keep this page open with the table to refer to until you get the hang of things.

Lastly, you’ll find the majority of the settings controls to the top right. There’s another access point to instant chat and a myriad of audio and visual settings which we’ll elaborate on shortly. There’s also an overview of your Evolution account history from the clock icon, game information behind the ? icon and a button that puts the game in full screen.

Functionality

Evolution Dream Catcher Review - 10

The fifteen-second betting window begins when the virtual layout rises and appears as shown in the image.

The amount you’ll be wagering with is encircled with a gold ring so make sure that’s correct before you click the area you’d like to bet on. Don’t worry if you do place your chips incorrectly, there’s the possibility to undo your bet to correct this as well as the option to repeat your last bet or double your wager if you’ve got a good feeling about the next spin. You can use the Bet On All button to bet on all six numbers at one go if your bankroll permits it.

We used a 1GB download speed Wi-Fi connection to play the game, which ran smoothly, just as we expect from such a leading software supplier.

Audio and Visuals

The uniqueness of this game’s audio is two-fold – the music used and the bubbliness of the live dealers. Fittingly, the former can be described as game show instrumental music that really sets the scene. Drumming builds up suspense as the wheel goes over its final few turns while a tada-style sound effect emphasises the winning number as it is announced. Despite all this, the dealer’s voice remains crystal-clear throughout but if you’d like to adjust the volume of either you can do so via the speaker and cog icons on the interface.

As is the standard for Evolution Gaming, Dream Catcher is set in a state-of-the-art studio in Riga where a multi-camera rig captures the game play action from various viewpoints. There’s a wide shot view of the entire set, side view of both the left and right of the set as well as two unique close-ups of the wheel – a wide view and one that shows the leather strap coming to a stop. If you’re playing on desktop, there’s a choice between two viewing modes. A fullscreen HD view which is as we described earlier while the classic mode places the stream in the centre with the previous results and chat to either side. The stream is delivered to your screen in about 24 frames per second with a video buffering memory that will invariably vary depending on your Internet connection. This can be set as either medium, high or HD, as best suits your Internet speed.
